Does a heat pump change the ideal supplier?

Thanks to its coefficient of performance (it delivers 3 to 4 kWh of heat for 1 kWh of electricity), it uses far less than direct resistive heating — but the electricity bill still rises sharply. A Walloon household that ran at 3,500 kWh often moves to 6,500-9,500 kWh once the pump is in service. Fixed, variable or dynamic tariff: which for a heat pump?
For a heat pump, the most profitable contract depends mainly on your ability to shift the heating in time. A fixed tariff locks in the price and reassures on budget, but you pay more per kWh — a real handicap when you consume a lot. A variable tariff is generally cheaper and suits most systems that run without fine control. The dynamic tariff, meanwhile, follows the wholesale price hour by hour: it becomes very attractive if your pump can be controlled (buffer tank, smart thermostat, battery or solar panels), because you schedule the heating during the cheapest hours, sometimes at negative prices. According to VREG estimates, a flexible household can save several dozen to nearly 190 € per year. Be careful, though: the CREG points out that dynamic pricing remains marginal (around 0.4 % of the Belgian residential market) and that a non-flexible household risks overspending by about 15 %. Do the new 11am-5pm off-peak hours help your heat pump?
Yes, especially in Wallonia, where the dual-hour meter reform changes things for a heat pump. Since 1 January 2026, Walloon off-peak hours cover 11am-5pm and 10pm-7am, every day, i.e. about 105 hours a week. This new midday slot is a boon for a heat pump: it can pre-heat the house or the hot-water tank in the middle of the day at the reduced rate — and it is even more profitable if you have solar panels producing at the same time. In Brussels, off-peak remains 10pm-7am plus the weekend. Wallonia also offers an incentive network tariff, ORES's "Impact" tariff, designed for households with large programmable consumption such as heat pumps, electric cars or boilers: it rewards off-peak consumption.
