EAN code on your meter: where to find it in Belgium

The EAN code identifies your supply point, not your meter. Where to read it on your bill and how to request it from Fluvius, ORES, RESA or Sibelga.

The EAN code is an 18 digit number starting with 54 that identifies your electricity or gas supply point. It does not identify your meter, contrary to what the way people search for it suggests. You will find it on your energy bill, in your online account, and sometimes on a sticker near the meter.

18 digits starting with 54: the anatomy of an EAN code

EAN stands for European Article Numbering. Grid operators and suppliers use it to designate, without ambiguity, a connection point on the Belgian distribution network. Always 18 digits. Always a 54 prefix.

In Brussels, Sibelga goes further and publishes a useful rule: every EAN code for a Brussels supply point begins with 5414489. If the number you copied is shorter than 18 digits or does not start with 54, you copied something else. That is the first check to run, before even looking for the right one.

Is the EAN code the number of my meter?

No. Your bill carries three numbers that almost everyone mixes up, and they do not designate the same thing. The EAN code designates a supply point, meaning an address connected to the grid. The meter number is the serial number of the device, engraved or printed on its casing. The customer number is issued by your supplier and has no existence at all for the grid operator.

The column that matters is the fourth one. Sibelga states it in plain words: when a meter is replaced, the device gets a new serial number and the EAN code does not move. This holds for a digital meter as much as for a budget meter. In other words, the smart meter rollout has no effect whatsoever on your EAN code, and there is nothing for you to do on that front.

The opposite is true when you move. The EAN code stays attached to the property you leave and you inherit the one of your new address, which is why it sits at the centre of the energy takeover document. If you are preparing a change of address, our guide to electricity steps when moving house sets out the full timeline.

Where can you find your EAN code without calling anyone?

On your bill, first of all. The EAN code appears on every energy bill, monthly or reconciliation, on paper as well as in PDF. It also shows up in your supplier's online account, in your grid operator's account, and on a connection quote if you ever requested one.

The sticker on the meter is where the two halves of the country diverge. Fluvius names three places explicitly: the supplier's bill, the Fluvius quote, and the sticker on the meter. The equivalent page at ORES, consulted on 31 August 2026, lists five places to look and mentions the meter in none of them. It points straight to an online form instead. In Wallonia, do not count on the sticker: it often exists, it is not guaranteed.

Then there is the case of a home whose keys you have just received, with no bill in your name. Sibelga gives the right reflex here: ask the previous occupants or the building manager, who have the code on their own bills.

Fluvius, ORES, RESA and Sibelga: requesting it operator by operator

When no bill is available, the request goes through the grid operator, and the procedure differs depending on where the meter sits.

Brussels is the best served region: the Sibelga search starts from the address and only covers Brussels meters. Flanders is the most formal, since Fluvius requires a written power of attorney for any request filed by a third party, professionals included. A few Walloon municipalities fall outside ORES and RESA and belong to AIEG, AIESH or REW, each with its own request page.

How many EAN codes does one home carry?

Two, in the most common setup: one for electricity, one for gas. The count rises in Flanders, where Fluvius also assigns an EAN code to the sewerage connection, and admits itself that customers usually cannot find that one on their own. A Flemish home heated with gas can therefore carry three codes where a Walloon or Brussels home carries two.

The exclusive night meter is a third case. It is generally attached to the same EAN code as the main meter, which is why it triggers no second standing charge, but the grid operator may also give it a separate one. Check your bill rather than assume.

A genuinely separate second meter, on the other hand, always gets its own EAN code.

That is a paid intervention, to be requested from the grid operator, and it has a little known consequence: two distinct supply points can be served by two different suppliers, even though they are physically wired to the same installation. If your setup combines several meters and a night rate, our article on choosing a supplier for off peak hours covers the break even thresholds by profile.

Should you give your EAN code to a supplier?

Yes for a subscription you started yourself, no for everything else. The position taken by ORES is categorical: the EAN code is confidential data, and someone acting in bad faith who holds it can switch your energy contract in your place. Fluvius takes the same line, since it makes any request filed on behalf of someone else conditional on a written power of attorney, and permanently displays a warning about phishing attempts run in its name.

That caution is useful, but it sits in tension with how the market actually works: no supplier switch can go through without the code being handed over. The dividing line lies in who takes the initiative, not in secrecy.

  • A subscription you started yourself: yes, the supplier needs it to file the switch request with the grid operator.
  • The energy takeover document when moving house: yes, the EAN appears there and that is precisely its purpose.
  • Cold calls or door to door sales: no. Nothing obliges you to hand it over on your doorstep, and a serious supplier will accept that you call back yourself.
  • Online comparison forms: pointless. An honest simulation runs on your postcode and your annual consumption, never on your EAN code.
  • A neighbour, an estate agent, an acquaintance: no. Fluvius demands a power of attorney even from a professional, which says a lot about how sensitive the data is.
Understanding the numbers printed on a Belgian energy bill

Three mistakes that send a contract to the wrong supply point

The first is copying the meter number instead of the EAN code. The supplier then finds no matching point and the file stalls, often without you hearing about it for several weeks. The second is nastier: the electricity and gas EAN codes of one address look so alike that a swap goes unnoticed, and the dual fuel contract goes sideways.

The third happens in apartment blocks, where meters sit together in a shared room. Copying the code read off the neighbouring meter means switching another occupant's contract, and paying their consumption.

The money at stake is not symbolic. Our August 2026 readings put the annual bill of a household consuming 3,500 kWh between 1,304 and 1,589 €, close to 300 € apart depending on the supplier. An EAN error means that sum billed on the wrong point, plus a reconciliation to untangle afterwards. If you are already there, our guide on an electricity adjustment bill that is too high gives the step by step verification procedure.

Once you hold the right code, the rest is simple: compare before you sign, and check your own case in our ranking of the best electricity suppliers or with the bill simulator. Reference prices from the regulators remain available at the CREG, the federal energy regulator, and at the CWaPE, Brugel or the VREG, the regional regulators for Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders respectively.

Frequently asked questions

No. Replacing a meter does not move the supply point: the device gets a new serial number, but the EAN code stays the same. Sibelga and CallMePower both confirm this. The same applies when a budget meter is fitted.

In Brussels only. Sibelga offers an online search that starts from the address, then asks for the meter number to separate several connections at the same building. In Wallonia and Flanders the meter number is required from the start.

Fluvius promises an answer within five working days through its contact form. Sibelga answers immediately online or by phone on 02 549 41 00. ORES publishes no lead time for its form, but its general number handles the request live.

No, these are two separate supply points, so two different 18 digit codes. They look very much alike and often differ by only a few digits in the middle, which is why they get mixed up when signing a dual fuel contract.
